#Leadership in the News – March 8, 2017

Leadership in the news is where I will take random news articles found on the Internet and talk about their leadership content (good or bad). The content might not always be from the boardroom or Fortune 500 companies but they are all about Leadership.

‘Star Wars’ actress empowers young girls with her own fashion line

Great article about how one actress (in this case a voice actress) brought her character from a galaxy far, far away and onto t-shirts right here on our humble little planet. Actress Ashley Eckstein is the force behind the voice of Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker’s former apprentice, from Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. Now she is running a clothing company named, Her Universe. The company produces “geeky merchandise for women and kids”.

Seizing the opportunities before her and exploiting her role in the Star War universe, Eckstein is on the right track to not only cash in but deliver a message of empowerment and leadership to all that follow her whether it be in business or on the small screen as potential Padawans (learners/students).

Every leader at one point or another has had to start at the bottom. While at the bottom, future leaders might have to do work that they feel is beneath them or not something they see themselves doing. Guess what? That is known as paying your dues. Everyone has to pay them. Some pay them longer than others and some pay them later rather than sooner but trust me, everyone pays those dues. Then next step on their way to becoming leaders is to not give up.

Sometimes it may feel like you are spinning your wheels but keep trying. Keep moving forward. Keep doing. It is obvious that entrepreneurs like Ashley Eckstein are doing just that. Their ability to take their opportunities and turn them into realities is truly the stuff of legends. Now don’t mistake my use of the word “legends”.

When I say “legends” I mean individuals that because of their hard work, determination, and continued innovation have become larger than life. A great example of larger than life is Sir Richard Branson (Virgin Group) . Though I have never met him, I can see that hard work is still very much part of his life. Getting in the trenches is as much a part of his life today as it was back when started Student magazine, in the late 1960s.

When it comes to Ashley Eckstein, seizing the moment and running with it is the stuff that larger than life people do. It is the stuff that legends do on a daily basis.

So don’t give up. Those that follow you expect you to never give up. Show them the way to becoming leaders of their own by never letting opportunities pass you by as Ashley Eckstein did with Her Universe.

Things To Give Up To Be Successful: Give Up The Need To Impress Others

Things To Give Up To Be A Successful Leader

Give Up The Need To Impress Others

—–

Why do we impress others?
Easy for me to say. I am a writer, a videographer, a photographer, and many other things.

Why do I do them? For those that do not know me or only live in a shallow will believe that I do this to impress others. I do it because I can, I want to, and most of all when I set my mind to something I do it.

There have been many people in my life that see what I do and believe what to do is being a show off. However, they are entitled to their opinion of me. That is all up to them but there are just some things that I have done that do not justify what they believe.

I wanted to join the US Army and be an infantryman and I did. I waited before starting a family and I did. I started a business and I did, several of them as a matter of fact. I wanted to write a book and I did, six of them so far. Do you see where I am going with this?

All of the things that I did for myself, I did because I want to leave a legacy for my children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. I did these things mostly because I wanted to, so I challenged myself and I did it.

Sure, my younger self was all about impressing my parents, my friends, my family, my bosses, my teachers but eventually you start to figure out that you can only write checks you can cash.

Why do we need to give up the need to impress?
Have some respect for yourself. Impressing others gets you nowhere. However, impressing yourself gets you everywhere.

Have respect for others, as no one likes a show off. Trying to impress others minimizes your impact on others. They will never be certain on just how authentic you really are.

Get rid of that uncertainty by going with your instincts and not the facade that comes with trying to impress others.

How To Impress Others Without Actually Trying To Impress Others.

Be Authentic. By being real, that comes through and those that see you out will do so because of your authenticity.

Be Yourself. As the saying goes, “Be Yourself Because Everyone Else Is Taken.”

Just be yourself and the place that will take you, will most certainly astound you.

What do you do when others are trying to impress you?

Before you do anything rash, find out why they are trying to impress you.

If they are trying to impress you for selfish reason. Let’s say they are name dropping, remember in this social media age, EVERYONE is just one mouse click away. Ask yourself and them what purpose does name dropping serve?

However, if they are trying to impress you for selfless reasons, hear them out. Then give them feedback.

Then make certain to let them know the next time to not work too hard to impress. Let them know to just be themselves.

It works for you, it will work for them.

The Only Person You Need To Impress Is Yourself.

I firmly believe that we must challenge ourselves daily as that is the only way we are going to overcome our need to impress others. By challenging ourselves we make ourselves better people.

My mantra is “Be Better Than You Were Yesterday.” What’s your mantra?

Whatever, that mantra is it should be one that serves your and acts as a motivator to get you to where you really want to be.

Challenge Yourself Constantly. Out do yourself constantly.

When you are constantly challenging yourself, you have absolutely no time to worry about others and what they think or believe. Most importantly, you have no time to worry about whether or not they are impressed by you and what you do.

Keep your challenges up-to-date and changing. Because when you stop changing, you are more apt to fall back into MEDIOCRITY.

You know what happens when you fall back into mediocrity and what it leads to: TRYING TO IMPRESS OTHERS

So embrace change and give up the need to impress others! Challenge yourself to impress ONLY yourself.

IN THE NEWS: Sears Closures (a tale of transformation?)

On Thursday, April 21, 2016 Sears Holdings announced “it will close 68 Kmart and 10 Sears stores this summer in its latest move to cut losses.” (http://www.wfaa.com/money/78-sears-kmart-stores-to-close-see-the-list/147799701)

Folks, the only question we should be asking is why are these “anchor” type stores (the big ones at the mall) closing when the economy is doing better and gasoline prices are relatively cheap?

Think about this: When gas prices are low people have more money in their pockets that can be used to spend at places like Sears. Overall, the economy appears to be moving in a positive direction.

The U.S.Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew 1.4 percent in the 4th Quarter of 2015 while positive is a slower pace than the 2.0 percent in the previous quarter. (http://www.bea.gov/newsreleases/glance.htm)

Heck, even real disposable personal income increased 0.3 percent in February 2016. No matter how you look at things, positive growth is still positive growth.

Realistically, I know all this can change on a dime but for now things are poised for a pretty good year. Also, I am not part of the Sears Holdings inner circle and will almost never know what the real reason may be for the closures. That’s alright, all this speculation is pretty good.

Also what exactly what kind of “transformation” is needed to make the organization “profitable”? Unless the organization is planning to open more specialized (niche) stores, doing the same old thing (only less of it) is NOT going to cut it.
