“Do As I Say, Not As I Do” aka Hypocrisy 101

“Do As I Say, Not As I Do” aka Hypocrisy 101

Why is this still a thing? For as long as I can remember, leading by example is the number one way for leaders to lead. Leading by Example, sets a standard that challenges followers to either match or exceed. Leading by Example is what all great leaders, either intentionally or unintentionally, do 100% of the time.

As unfortunate as it is to say, that even though it is 2022 there are still managers that believe that leading by example is not the way to lead. While, they may be aware that they cannot club someone/anyone over the head to get them to do something they want done. Those managers then resort to talking down to those they manage. They resort to threat. Worst of all, they resort to a tactic known as “Do as I say, not as I do” process.

A manager will set the expectation of the employees or staff or team members then almost immediately the manager does the opposite. For example, the manager demands all employees be at their desk and working by no later than 8:01am. Sounds plausible. Yet, the manager rolls in around five minutes to nine or sometimes around fifteen after 9:00am. Then when questioned by a team member the response from the manager is almost always “if they don’t like it, they can leave.” Now that’s hardly the sound of a genuine leader. That is the action of an authentic hypocrite.

That someone who engages in the “same behavior or activity for which one criticizes another or the practice of claiming to have moral standards or beliefs to which one’s own behavior does not conform”. Yes, that hypocrite.

That type of individual is not alone. they are not the anomaly, not the exception but they are, also, not the standard. Hypocrites are out there. How they are made can vary. Some say hypocrites are created when others they saw as mentors did to them that they now do to others. Sadly, those individuals grow to become managers (please note I never said they grow up to become leaders). They do so because they do not know any better.

The other train of thought when it comes to the birth of hypocrites, is that they have a deep-rooted sense of entitlement. Look at those individuals that obtain a degree and immediately that sense of “I know better than you do because I have a degree” comes into play. Sure enough, those individuals are truly believing that their degree trumps real world experience. As opposed to putting in the work and learning the right way, their mind is wrapped around the concept of that degree is the end all and be all.

Yet, there are “managers” that self-proclaim as leaders are out there behaving in a manner completely opposite of the “Lead by Example” mindset. Let me be the first to confirm what many are thinking when it comes hypocrites most will never change. That is why most will never understand why those they are supposed to be leading will never see them as leaders.

The ability of the manager to change for the better is there ONLY if they want to change. Only when they realize that as managers, they can be more to the people that report to them, can they begin to change.

Changing for the better is realizing that the dictatorial mindset that comes with the “do as I say, not as I do” attitude is not the way to lead. Every manager must strive to become a leader. Every leader must do what it takes to fully understand that Leading by Example will be easier to set any standard than it is to dictate or, heaven forbid, micro-manage.

Managers if you do not believe that those that follow you are NOT watching you but following your ONE-SIDED demands let me be the first to tell you: YOU ARE WRONG!

They are watching everything. They are watching everything YOU say. They are watching everything YOU do.

If you do not believe me then prepared for the end results that are sure to follow because of your naivete, your ignorance or your arrogance.

The Here & Now Is All You Need

image: here and now is all you need

Dear Current and Future Leaders,
The paths you will take and the journeys you will find yourself on will only pale in comparison to the HERE & NOW.

Right now, there is nothing more important, nothing more urgent than what is happening. This is the moment that will make your future or condemn you to your past. It is your opportunity to make it all better for yourself.
Whatever it is that you are doing, saying, experiencing is what matters the most of all. Remember, in this moment everything and I do mean everything is being born again. There will never be another moment like this one.

Remember, if you find yourself lacking then you have from this moment on, to grow, to become better.

Remember, if you are at odds with someone for a pointless reason, one they will be gone. Once they are gone, will be nothing you can to bring them back.

Remember, at this moment somewhere on the planet the brings a new day. Only you can make this moment the best moment you are experiencing right here, right now.

Please note, that if you continue to find yourself living in the past or hoping and wishing for a better future, then you deserve the misery you seek and will find.

Never forget, everyone else has a duty and a responsibility to ONLY themselves to be and do better today.
As I have said, as well as others have spoken, no matter where you are or what you do HERE AND NOW is all you need.

Leadership Observation – Going Forward Into The Future #01

Seriously, as an individual, you can sit there burning bridges and building barriers but that will only put you in ISOLATION.
It is not too late to build bridges and add doors to the walls and you are putting yourself where you should be: OUT THERE!
Don’t for one second fool yourself that you can do it alone and damn everyone else. It does not work that way. Leaders, it IS your job to be create new points of contact, new conversations, new opportunities, and new iterations of yourself. KEEP IT NEW!
To take the reins of your present, let go of the past, understand that the future is still tomorrow. As a leader, there is nowhere to hide, you have no choice but to get out there.
It is not too late to do so. What is too late is in believing that the past will carry you for the rest of your life. However, if you believe that, you have got some growing up to do. The past is gone and it only serves as a stepping stone to move you up and out.
Use all that the past has taught you to teach others. Do not use the past as a crutch to help you limp along in life with a “oh woe is me” attitude that soon everyone will get tired of. By everyone, I mean those that are close to you and those that far from you.
If the events of 2020 taught us one thing is that we are all equal in our misery and in our happiness. Life going forward will never be the same. Throughout the quarantines and mandates everyone experienced what I call the GREAT EQUALIZER of 2020.
Suddenly, we were all thrust into something new, different, scary and uncertain. In the blink of an eye, family, friends, and neighbors were gone. How can that not affect people? How can that not affect you? If you claim none of that affected you, I declare BULLSHIT and I challenge you to change my mind.
You can front, you can put up a façade but your private self knows you were scared, you feared the unknown, the uncertainty, I know I did, all of us did. However, over time as the word got out and we all started to understand more, then the fear, the uncertainty and the unknown started to subside. But if you still say “NO, NOT ME” then please continue fooling yourself because you are the only you are fooling.
Current and Future Leaders, know these two things: False bravado is not the sign of a Genuine Leader. False bravado is usually found in consistent use of a bad manager. Leaders of exceptional caliber do not need to put on airs or wear false colored glasses. Authentic Leadership is based on the individual’s skills, knowledge, experience and the resulting wisdom.
Let this serve as a notice to the individuals that prefer to use a “crutch” as a tool to garner ill-deserved attention. Please know that your time is quickly coming to an end. As we emerge from the “Great Equalizer” and know the playing field has been leveled, if you find that you, as an individual, cannot compete then it is the perfect time to re-think who you are today and who you want to become. Oh, and age is NOT an excuse to stop you from wanting or trying. Every one of us, must work at changing today to be better than yesterday. If you can’t do that, then you get what you most definitely deserve, a seat in the corner, facing the corner.
I cannot say you deserve a seat at the kiddie table because the only thing the kids at the kiddie table want is to move up to the adult table. Even they know that to make that happen they have to want to grow and change. Nope, your only place is in the corner. Only you can avoid the corner, away from everyone but that is up to you.
Now is the time that NEW LEADERS must emerge, current leaders that means you too. You now have the undeniable opportunity to change your path or course or whatever you call it. To FINALLY become the leader, you have always wanted to follow.
In 2021, 2022 and beyond, you and I and everyone on this planet have been given another opportunity to create something new, do something good. Those that want to follow you deserve nothing but your best, so don’t blow it!
and Get To Work!
Thank you for your time,
